Best Satays in Melaka

Written by Updated ago

Satay is a dish of skewered grilled meat with Javanese origins, and is widely popular all over Southeast Asia. Chicken, beef and pork are usually the three main choices here in Malaysia, and the gastronomy involves the combination of lean and fat cuts marinated with turmeric, giving it a yellow tinge. Grilled over a charcoal flame, satay is usually served with “ketupat” (compressed rice cakes), raw onions and cucumber chunks, and a bowl of peanut sauce for dipping.  Here are the top picks for the best satay in Melaka. The only question is: how many satay sticks are able to fulfill the glutton in us?

Lorong Hang Jebat - a tourist hotspot in Melaka, has always been busy with passersby from all walks of life. Nonetheless, at the corner of this alley is where you can find stellar pork satay at Kedai Makanan dan Minuman Lung Ann. Fanned over a hot charcoal flame, the meat is succulent with subtly scorched edges, served with a homemade peanut and pineapple dipping sauce, with sliced cucumber and onion wedges. For the more adventurous, offal satay is available here. It may look and sound unappetising, but the strong seasonings and turmeric powder turn these unpalatable pieces into a sensational skewer noted for its crisp edges. Additionally, you can get a portion of “ketupat” too for a more filling stomach.

Ming Sate Hut has always been the longest lunch pit stop for foodies from neighbouring states and travellers visiting Melaka. Located a few doors away from Nadeje cake shop famous for their mille crepes, Ming Sate Hut’s pork satay is just as good. Their all-time best-selling pig’s intestines here are invariably selling like hot cakes and running out of stock. A delicate mouthful of well-marinated satay, moist on the inside with charred brittle edges on the sides; we only wished this delicacy came in larger portions. If pork is not to your taste, fret not - chicken satay is also served here. The piquant aroma of the pineapple-bilimbi dipping sauce is palatable, and leaves a tingling sensation with every bite. Do request for chilli extract to spice up your satay-chomping experience.

    Tips

Do not hesitate to ask for satay sauce refills. Limited street parking bays.

Dating back to 1961, this satay house is a family business that has been passed down for many generations, giving the shop name “Xiang Ji” commemorating their grandfather’s name, the founder of this satay house after its relocation. Prominently known as “Jonker Satay”, this shop serves pork satay and offal satay such as pork intestine and liver too. This commendable satay house has proven that Melaka is not only famous for its “satay celup”. Well-marinated, juicy with a crisp around the edges and chewy at the centre, the pork satay is served with the typical pairing of cucumber chunks and onion wedges, “nasi impit”, and a mellow peanut-pineapple dipping sauce.

    Tips

Located one street away from Jonker Walk. Park at your own risk as there is no dedicated street parking.
