It’s a pie, no it’s a tart, no it’s actually a Quiche, a popular French pastry that is rather pronounced as “Kesh”. This egg custard which looks like a bloated crown, is usually filled with cheese, seafood, meat and vegetables and comes in two sizes, pint-sized for nibblers and pie-like for diners. It’s not something one readily would admit, yet we agree a good quiche could jostle away pancakes and bagels, be it for breakfast or tea snack. If you’re on a mission to savour the best in Penang, spots below will never let you down, time for “Quantum of Quiche.”

Wheat Connection
Not far away from Masjid Kapitan Keling is this humble restaurant that most Penangites connect to if they need freshly baked bread and pastries, colourful cakes, confectionaries and pizzas. The interior does bring lots of comfort, chic lightings over a glass shelve that displays the ranges of desserts and cute ornaments that make up some charm. However, never miss their quiche Lorraine, which is an absolute winner which offers a crackly crust followed by a mixture of custard and chicken chunks. You might want to grab a few to company you on the couch.

Irrawaddy Fine Food
Looking to put your feet up and unwind in a laid-back atmosphere while dining comfort foods such as homemade pizzas, sandwiches, beef meatloaf, assorted cakes and coffees? Then make your way to this hidden gem at Pulau Tikus. It’s somewhat a pit stop that has everything, from freshly baked bread, homemade sausages, imported jams and many more. Among the best sellers is their mushroom quiche, where a creamy and cheesy mushroom filling sits in the middle of the firm crust. It’s coupled with fresh lettuce and lashings of vinegar. You would bookmark this morsel in your mind.

China House
The cake connoisseur needs no introduction in the island, it’s a place that first comes into our mind when our plate craves for sugary punch. The atmosphere is absolutely fascinating; the whole building is artsy-fartsy, wedged with beautiful wall paintings, charming ornaments and various dining spaces that complement the confectionary galore. Rather unknown or underrated is their range of quiches where caramelised onions, as well as rocket and feta quiches, have received positive feedback among those who have opted for a change. So why not you?

Ete Cafe
Under the stewardship of a Taiwanese couple who has learnt baking skills from Le Cordon Bleu cooking school, the bars are certainly raised high for a widespread range of desserts that they offer. Colourful Macaroons and Crème Brulee are front runners yet never leave without gobbling down their Mushroom Quiche, which is reminiscent of a stuffed pizza. Fillings of mushroom, cheese and cream make a velvety base while the flaky crust gives a nice snap. A cup of joe would do justice to the whole dining experience.

Caffeine Chemistry
Housed in the refurbished Crime Heritage is another contender to the trendy cafe scene in Penang. The interior does match the name, you’ll spot rainbow spread of apparatus and utensils adorning the wall, pleading you to start your sweet-tooth experiment. The main draws are the waffles, cakes, hearty Western delights and tarts yet very little know about their quiches and for those who have tried it’s an absolute wonder. It’s generously loaded with turkey ham and binds well with the creamy and cheesy mélange below the crust.
