Although it looks like a conventional hawker stall and restaurant, Restaurant Kam Heong has been one of the oldest Chinese hawker restaurants around PJ State. Available in yellow noodles, bihun and kuay teow, the prawn mee here is exceptionally popular and locals who live nearby here love it. The soup is not too spicy and is rather sweet with the taste of fresh prawns. It also has a whole hard boiled egg in it and for those of you who love this small delicacy, there are also crispy fried shallots on top of the noodles. What’s not to love?

Right behind Public Bank & HSBC Bank, nearby Menara MBPJ

They’re so famous, they were even featured in The Star newspaper! The fried shallots are served separately in a spoon because the owners claim that some people prefer their shallots at the side. The serving of prawns are generous but they’ use the dried ones compared to fresh prawns. The sweet soup and chili oil floating on top makes it a wonderful spicy affair!

The bowl of prawn mee (otherwise known as Hokkien mee in Penang) in Ong Lai certainly delivers on the necessities of what makes a great bowl of this classic local favourite. For starters, it comes with both mee and mee hoon, which helps give more textures to work with in each bite. The bowl has all the essential ingredients that make a good bowl of prawn mee such as prawns, pork ribs, a halved full boiled egg, bean sprouts, green vegetables, and spicy prawn broth; all of which help to create a myriad of flavours and textures in every bite. As far as flavours go, the broth is on the milder side, yet its rich with all the prawn and pork flavour in the soup, making it an accessible and enjoyable meal overall.

    Tips

Ask for more soup if there isn’t enough left in the bowl.

    Things to expect

A side serving of prawn chilli paste will be served to help make the soup spicier.

    Best with

Have the floral pineapple delight mocktail to help cool and cleanse the palette after having this rich and spicy dish.
