Best Pan Mee in Johor Bahru (JB)

Written by Updated ago

Pan Mee is an authentic Malaysian dish, and Johor is not to be excluded from the wonders of Pan Mee. In Johor, it is common to see Pan Mee served in soup, along with dried anchovies, minced pork, mushrooms and leafy vegetables (aka pucuk manis). Pan Mee is also addressed as "flat flour noodles;" although truthfully old school Johoreans would choose the traditional "hand-peeled-and-kneaded" Pan Mee over the latter. Some says they are the same, while some argues that they are different, but to be frank it's just the shape of the noodles. In this list, we cover the different noodle ranges of Pan Mee in Johor to cater to those who favour one or the other.

Johor-goers are very familiar with Yi Bao, who whips out amazing Pan Mee. Funnily enough they call it Mee Hoon Kueh here. It's not only an all-time favorite for all Johoreans but also the to-go food for comfort times. The city of Johor itself has many variances of mee hoon kueh but Yi Bao opts to stick to the old school recipes, maintaining many of their decade-old customers. Even though the choices on the menu is not that much, they can still attract a large crowd, moreso especially during lunch hour. The locals' favorite in Yi Bao is usually the soup pan mee, which is heartwarmingly amazing. The fragrant pork broth tastes even better when eaten along with the chewy pork balls.

    Tips

Other than mee hoon kueh, they also offer fine noodles, mee hoon and porridge, all in the same category of comfort food.

    Things to expect

Their noodles taste best because of the added 'pucuk manis' vegetables, in our opinion. Topped up with some fried anchovies and fresh egg for a wonderful combination!

    Best with

For beverage wise, the sour plum lime juice is always the recommended drink, best matched with the mee hoon kueh.

    Price

    RM3.50 to RM8.00

Red Pepper Chilli Noodles House 辣子Non halal 01f78899591256b47a2708a65f6538333b86089a30fbd22545a41deece4ea490

At Taman Mt Austin, expect to pay a visit at Red Pepper Chilli Noodles House for some hot and burning pan mee. As the name goes, Red Pepper Chilli serves pan mee along with many other variances of noodles, but they all have one trait in common - they're all spicy! Needless to say all spicy eaters will definitely enjoy this hub. The mixed-up noodles coated in egg yolk and chili flakes are mouth-blowingly good, but the lard oil used definitely made the noodles much more fragrant on its own. Best eaten in slurps!

    Tips

Parking is quite hard to find here.

    Things to expect

Comfortable environment serving traditional & decent pan mee with choices of toppings.

    Best with

Try the Braised Pork Pan Mee.

    Price

    RM4.00 to RM8.00

You can have your noodles in many variances the way you like it. From mee hoon kueh (peeled pan mee), yun mian (rounded strands of pan mee), ban mian (the original flattened version of pan mee).. you name it, they have it. You can even have the options to use Yee Mee or Maggi Mee. Of course the mee hoon kueh or ban mian remains the best. Make a mental note to return again because it is EXTREMELY ADDICTIVE. It's delicious and the best part is the noodles come in a really big bowl.

    Tips

It's a small restaurant that is tucked under a huge tree and it shares the same shop lot with Fujifilm.

    Things to expect

Might be a little discomforting to dine but the food makes it worth your while.

    Best with

The soup is amazingly good but piping hot so be very careful. As your tongue burns from the heat, cool it down by sipping on a bowl of ice cold Aiyu Jelly Lime Drink.

    RM3.50 to RM7.00

Chili Pan Mee 辣椒板面 Bukit IndahNon halal 01f78899591256b47a2708a65f6538333b86089a30fbd22545a41deece4ea490

Bukit Indah residences are more than familiar with this neighborhood pan mee outlet. Instead of the typical, soupy bowl of noodles, people always opt for the heaty and more-than-spicy chilli dry pan mee. The must-haves in a good bowl of chili pan mee would include supple noodles, topped with a perfectly poached egg. Break the egg yolk and mix the noodles uup along with some added chili to deliver a spicy kick.

    Tips

You can decide how spicy you want your noodles to be but best to not start off with too much chili as the in-house chili is pretty hot in small amounts.

    Things to expect

Fragrant and spicy dry pan mee.

    Best with

Best eaten with a cooling drink. Trust us, you need it.

    RM4.00 to RM8.00
