Best Nasi Briyani in KL

Written by Updated ago

This dish comes in so many almost identical names that you would twist your tongue pronouncing it one right after the other: biryani, biriani, briyani. Nasi Briyani is the label that we are comfortable with in describing the popular rice dish typically found in mamak or Indian restaurants. Branded as one of the favourite food staples among many Malaysians, it requires an extended cooking time to fulfil that desired flavour and aroma spawned from long-grain rice (basmati is most commonly-used), assorted spices, and meats (chicken, lamb or beef) or vegetables. Thanks to its potpourri of rich ingredients, it helps stimulate appetite, and at the last bite, your tummy will acknowledge it as a satisfying, filling meal!

From a humble stall in Lorong Bandar 13 to the comfort of a restaurant in Jalan Hang Kasturi, Restoran Tajudin Nasi Beriani’s signature nasi briyani meal is still packing a punch after all these decades. Regardless, operating in an actual establishment, you’ll be surprised that they don’t charge an exorbitant price for a plate of quality nasi briyani. If you’re a first timer, do pick the Chicken Briyani set. The rice is aromatic, the fried chicken, both juicy and succulent, while the rich curry and the irresistible sambal lands a spicy kick to your taste bud. If fried chicken is not your thing, then just switch it to beef, fish, mutton or squid, whichever you like!

Once known as Restoran Sharifa back in the ‘70s, Restoran Mahbub has always been renowned for their tempting Nasi Briyani Madu (honey briyani rice). Here you’ll find the sweetness of the crispy honey-glazed fried chicken goes really well with their fragrant nasi briyani. Other dishes to look out for are the signature Nasi Briyani Buhara Kambing (Lamb Buhara Briyani Rice) and, if you have a bigger budget to splurge, their magnificent New Zealand Lamb Shank. In other words, feel free to add up as many curries and dishes as nothing fails to work together with the rice. So bring over a caveman appetite and relish all those meaty goodness.

Can you believe that this Indian-Muslim restaurant has been around for more than 40 years! They owe their streak of success to non-other than their irresistible nasi briyani. The rice is always perfectly cooked with a satisfying balance of fluffiness and aromatic whiff and goes hand in hand with their scrumptious. Go for their signature ayam madu (honey chicken) with its meat deep-fried to crunchy perfection before coated with honey glaze – certainly a divine taste when taken with the fragrant briyani rice. Their ayam kurma (kurma chicken) comes highly recommended as well!

Restoran Ismail is another really good Indian restaurant that offers delicious briyani along with plenty of other stuff. With a little sign at the front entrance that changes quotes from day to day, it certainly does lighten the mood of their customers. As for their simple but awesome briyani, it's mildly spiced and goes great with some of their delectable side dishes. For those who are feeling a little more generous, you could opt for their meaty selection of Mutton Curry or Tandoori Chicken.
