Written by Updated ago

Laksa is a marvellous cuisine containing spicy broth, rice noodles, coconut, lemongrass, and some fish. Malaysian eats this dish all the time, no matter what time of the day breakfast, elevenses, lunch, or afternoon tea. Once you have tasted Laksa, you will end up wanting more. However, what is it about this dish that makes it so good? It is such a complex dish that combines elements of Malay, Chinese, and Indian. For a Malay taste, the main ingredients must be chillies, galangal and laksa leaves. If you add curry spices and noodles, you will have a Chinese version of laksa. A delicious laksa have the perfect balance of flavours with really deep umami, and then you will have the most satisfying laksa ever.

By the look of it, you would probably think that it will taste like Sarawak Laksa. However, this one has a hint of sour zest to it and a very strong curry powder flavour. Once you take a sip, it will bring back memories of Baba Nyonya’s cuisine. The dish looks pretty darn delicious with huge prawns. Again, this one is also different from the laksa served in West Malaysia. It has a sour taste and more like a fusion of curry powder and coconut milk.

The very famous dish of Kedai Kopi Yee Fung is the Yee Fung Laksa. If you are not familiar with Sarawak laksa, they look exactly like curry mee and taste basically the same. However, you can’t deny its delicious flavour – very creamy, not-too-spicy, and soupy noodle dish that comes with prawns. The bowl is packed with sprouts, strips of egg, shredded chicken and tau fu pok makes you feel like you’ve been given a warm hug. If you’re wondering, tau fu pok is deep-fried tofu that has a solid and chewy texture. With the right amount of coconut milk and extra sambal, you will never go wrong with this one.

Fong IP CAFÉ offers various ‘economy’ Malaysian meal including fried rice, fried noodles, and little dim sum-esque types of items. Apart from that, you can also order other set menu such as American-styled breakfast, kon loh mee (dried sauce style noodles) and the ever-so-popular Curry Laksa (spicy seafood type of Malaysian noodle soup dish!) and Nasi Lemak (coconut rice with curry and other side pairing). The laksa taste different from the ones in peninsula Malaysia which taste delightful and not spicy. The bowl is filled with three medium prawns, few slice of fresh butter fishes, slices of omelette served with curry laksa soup. Apparently, you have to try the dish in three separate ways – by itself, with the sweeter chili paste, then all together with the hot sauce. Interesting!

    Tips

The staffs and owner are super friendly, they can explain on how to eat the Laksa in different ways.
