Dim Sum is nothing unusual to us. It's a delightful meal usually taken on a weekend morning and comes in a vast roster of small dishes served on mobile carts. This bite-size dishes are prepared in many different ways - steamed, baked, grilled, stir-fried or deep fried.

    Maxim offers a variety of traditional dim sum cooked and prepared early for breakfast eaters. The dim food served are fairly reasonable and the bestsellers are their egg tart and char siew pau. Be prepared to wait for your turn to get a table as it can get pretty crowded. This place runs on a self-service approach, which means you'll need to go over to pick your dim sum and hand the staff your card to record them down.

    Self-service unless you order special noodles or rice.

    Yes, though the name of the restaurant is pretty generic, it's of the best in Penang. The tasty dim sum is freshly prepared on the spot so don't be surprised if you have to wait extra longer. The abundant variety will make you spoilt for choice, though the one that will stand out the most are the prawn dim sums.
    Tips

    After 1pm, it will be closed before opening at night to serve steamboat for dinner.

    Aik Hoe is one of the oldest dim sum eateries in Penang and was even quoted as the 50s restaurant for dim sum in the old days. The fried dim sums, though limited in selection will have you crave for more. You might even end up competing with the elderly aunties and uncles just to snatch the best dim sum from the trays.

    They open early, from 6am onwards.

    Carrot Cake.

    Yong Pin staple signature items include siu mai, lotus leaf-wrapped rice, spare ribs, fish balls and lor mai kai (glutinous rice with Chinese black mushrooms and barbeque meat). Don't miss out on their unique sweet and savoury paos! Look out for the chinese pork sausage pao, barbecued meat pao, meat pao (just spot the red dot) and lotus paste pao.

    Besides a breakfast fare, the dim sum is also available during dinner.

    Traditional dim sum house located in Penang’s old quarter.

    Braised ginger duck yee foo mee, but it is only available on Fridays and Saturdays.

    It’s hard to miss this large restaurant in Gurney Drive. There’s a wide assortments of steamed and deep-fried dim sum to choose from, all served in small bamboo steamers or plates for the fried ones. Though portions may look small but be warned, they are quite filling. To pair with the dim sum, they’ve got more than 20 noodle dishes which are reasonably priced as well!
    Tips

    They run on a self-service system but most customers aren't accustomed with queuing.

    Things to expect

    If you are standing in front of the restaurant, you can actually see the long stretch of seaside of Gurney!

    Noodles.

    This restaurant has been operating for more than 50 years and it is still up and running today. Tho Yuen Restaurant is well-known for its oriental breakfast serving dim sum and chicken rice. Contrary to the usual egg tart, their bestseller is shape of an oval. Tastes so good, you'll definitely want to pack a dozen home!
    Tips

    Parking space is limited and the place is a bit hot for diners.

    Old school dim sum.

    Famous Egg Tarts.
