The epitome of hawker food, char kuey teow is one of the best if not the best Malaysian hawker dish. With its Malaysian roots, char kuey teow is a must-have for any tourists or outsiders. Although the dish has been criticized by health advocates as being unhealthy due to its high content in saturated fat, it was actually created as a cheap source of energy for laborers whom were poor. The dish itself speaks for Malaysia's long history. Thus, we obviously had to find the best ones in PJ!

Aunty Gemuk @ Restoran Jamal Mohamed
Well, where should we start? First off, Aunty Gemuk's char kuey teow's stall sign actually simply reads 'Penang Fried Kuey Teow'. With her 20 years of experience, the cutie pie of an aunty gained herself a nickname and has been dubbed as a masterchef of char kuey teow. Located under the roof of a Malaysian restaurant, this dish is said to be the best one in the house. This stunner of a cook has been consistently serving gorgeous plates after plates to all Malaysians for a long time.More infoRestoran Jamal Mohamed View restaurant

O & S Restaurant
Yet again it is O & S Restaurant! Located at Taman Paramount, O & S is undoubtedly a pioneer in the hawker food scene. While we love this place, we certainly cannot say the same for the unending crowds here... But hey, good food requires patience and sacrifice, right? One of the main reasons for the constant swarm of patrons is due to one specific stall... The Penang hawker stall. Yep - besides assam laksa and har mee, char kuey teow is a common favourite here. Some even claim that the Penang food here is actually BETTER than those in Penang! Whattt?

The char kuey teow stall operated by an elderly husband and wife team in the Mayang Oasis food court at Taman Mayang Jaya is hands down one of the best char kuey teow in all of PJ. Their stall is at the end close to the washroom. There may be another Char Kuey Teow stall operating closer to the drinks stall. That's not the ONE.

Sisters Place
Recently opened in October 2015, Sisters Place is a branch of the famous Sisters Char Kuey Teow in USJ 16. Bringing Penang from Subang to Ara Damansara, we certainly are glad that we need not travel further than a certain radius to grab a plate of the sisters' signature dish. Sisters Place continues the legacy of the parent kopitiam by whipping up tasty char kuey teows to fellow happy customers!

Leong Kee Char Kuey Teow
Located opposite the PJ Old Town Market, Leong Kee Char Kuey Teow in Restoran New Beauty Century was voted as one of the top Char Kuey Teow contenders for The Star People's Food Awards. Leong Kee has been operating since 32 years ago - most of us in our team had not even been born yet! The dish here is served Teochew style. Noodles are springy and the cockles (siham) and prawns are fresh from the shores.

Frankie Char Koay Teow
Frankie Char Koay Teow can be found in Restoran 8888 in Mutiara Damansara. Ask around the area and everyone will tell you that he is the 'guy'! Now, there are many variants to char kuey teow, and Frankie's version comes with duck eggs instead of traditionally used chicken eggs. The noodles are also slightly lighter in color, but still possess a pretty good level of smokiness, as well as flavour. It is also loose, which makes eating it really easy. The additional cockles on the side are somewhat bloody, but not over spilled. In short, Frankie offers one of the best Penang char kuey teow in the area.

Little Penang Cafe
Little Penang Cafe is what most would consider as a small cafe that offers all kinds of quick meals - especially during rush hours. If you are craving for laksa in a shopping mall, think of Little Penang Cafe. Wished for some cendol or prawn mee? Why not Little Penang Cafe? In short, Little Penang Cafe has established themselves as the go-to place when one runs out of ideas or just had that sudden craving in mall. Fortunately, most of their food are pretty decent, like the char kuey teow, generously served and cooked till golden perfection. It may not be as smoky as some, but it does deliver sufficient flavours.

Lau Wan Kuetiau
Mr. Lau used to serve his char kuey teow in Pangkor Island back in the 80s. Over those years, Mr. Lau eventually perfected his own version of the Penang char kuey teow. Mr. Lau emphasizes on the importance of quality ingredients. It is precisely because of his strict quality control that he has kept his specialty dish on top charts for over three decades. Also, Mr. Lau is a warm welcomer who will speak to all his customers if he gets the chance to. We absolutely adore him and more importantly, we adore his char kuey teow of course!

CHUAN LEE Char Koay Teow
Chuan Lee Restaurant is what you'll expect from a regular hawker center. Plenty of people, fairly limited seats, no air-conditioning and the possibility of a grumpy owner. However, with a little patience, you might just be rewarded. For one, you'll notice the prawns are incredibly huge. On top of that, noodles are cooked firmly and loosely with an excessive amount of eggs and beansprout. Combining them together makes the dish really pleasant both in terms of texture and flavour. There's also sufficient smokiness and the added cockles just lifts the whole dish.

Sun Hin Loong Restaurant
Sun Hin Loong Restaurant is one of the most popular hawker center in the whole of PJ, maybe because it's located in SS2 and has been around for quite some time. Here, you can find all that you need ranging from basic chicken rice to economy rice and egg tarts to char kuey teow. It is also a great place for lunch, especially for office workers. Having said that, you might have to bare with the horrendous parking. The char kuey teow is like many others, good flavour, a nice heap of smokiness, perfectly balanced texture and a fairly hefty price to pay. But still, it's pretty good.

Dai Ban Noodles
Besides noodles, Dai Ban Noodles also serves rice and burgers. Since opening at the end of 2012, the restaurant has gained itself a reputation as a reliable noodle house. The great thing about the Dai Ban Char Kuey Teow (and Mee) lies in how unique it is. The plate consists of a mix of yellow noodles and rice strip noodles and thus, creating a more chewy and spongy texture. Besides great taste, food presentation and styling are also taken into account. Despite all the attentive details, prices are still affordable!

Heritage Village
As the name suggest, Heritage Village is another great restaurant to indulge yourself in traditional Malaysian cuisine. You can find the best of everything, from chicken rice to curry laksa, and lam mee to char kuey teow. Most of what is available are also made really pretty, presented nicely on a plate as well as priced rather steeply. As for the char kuey teow, you are looking at one that is cooked to be a little smokier than others. Though that normally translate to a dish being a little more salty - it's still bearable. The excess use of eggs is nice, as well as the generous amount of bean sprouts and fish cakes.

Otak Otak PlaceCertified
halalThere are much to indulge in at Otak Otak Place. Though it's predominantly nyonya cuisine, there are still a variety of Malaysian delights that everyone simply loves. Similarly, you'll find your favourite char kuey teow here as well, one that is glistening and dark brown in colour. There is also a good amount of beansprout to provide that refreshing crunch, as well as chilli to give it a little heat. What makes Otak Otak Place's char kuey teow stands out even more is the fact that there is an additional serving of otak-otak on the side.
