Best Ayam Penyet in PJ

Written by Updated ago

It is easy to understand why ayam penyet has won many hearts of Malaysians. The spicy sambal teamed with tender, spiced chicken alongside a serving of white rice; has all the components that make up a true Asian meal. All of us at FoodAdvisor.my remembered how an ayam penyet “wave” came crashing down in Malaysia years ago and everywhere you looked back then, ayam penyet restaurants were sprouting up like mushrooms. However, like all other crazes, things slowed down a little and only the truly delicious ones managed to stand strong up till today. Below, we have listed some of the best ayam penyet in Petaling Jaya.

Rankings of all participants as visible on our listings are solely voted by you, our beloved readers. With that said, we would encourage you to please vote for your preferred participants in order to ensure their rightful positions ranking-wise on our portal. Thank you!

The Ayam Penyet is a must for food lovers who want to satisfy their craving. The signature Ayam Penyet dish were specially marinated with various spice and herbs. Which give a certain special flavour. Costing a mere RM10, the Ayam Penyet comes with a platter of spicy sambal, deep fried tofu, deep fried tempe and a seperate plate of rice. Fried chicken is extremely tasty with crispy batter, sure you will be addicted. Aside from that, I'd also recommend other version of Empal Penyet and Lele Penyet.

The restaurant is at the shophouses facing the main road of Sunway opposite Sunway Pyramid.

This outlet has been a crowd favourite in The Curve, even garnering the award for Sales Achievement Award in 2014. That’s how popular this place is & if yoAyamPenyet Lekou have not tried the ayam penyet here, you should. Now. They only use ayam kampung (minus the toughness) & though the chicken may not be in large pieces but they’re chunks of flavourful meat which makes up for its lack in size. The skin is fried to a golden exterior & so crunchy. The ayam penyet here ticks all the right boxes: spicy, filling & worth the money. So, a plate of smashing chicken, anyone?
    Tips

Good news: you can actually pick your spiciness level of choice so do ask the servers. And oh, credit cards are not accepted here, so make sure you have cash on hand.

    Things to expect

Expect an outlet filled with loyal customers. Warung Leko has collected numerous loyal customers so expect familiar faces if you’re thinking of coming here more than once.

    Best with

Es Degan, which is coconut juice spiked with rose syrup.

    RM9.80

This chain restaurant has always been full, and we were lucky to be able to get a seat on the weekend. Gotta agree that the chicken were fried so succulently that using cutleries to eat with was not a problem at all. However, just like every ayam penyet dish, be careful of the spiciness level of the dish served here. It may be too hot to handle for some of us.Perhaps you can ask for a tone down in terms of its spiciness level.
    Tips

As usual, ask for the chicken thigh part or else, you will be served really small portions.

    Things to expect

Well, it is a mall outlet so expect crowds or worse, long queues on weekends. I’ve been there & trust me, you do not want to go there.

    Best with

Their sirap bandung cincau. My personal favourite drink here. An alternative will be their ABC Laici, yummyyy!

Probably cost wise this is the cheapest ayam penyet on this list but with equally satisfying quality, Warung Pojok may not be a five-star restaurant at first glance but they sure cook like one. Warung Pojok is a small and humble outlet tucked in one of the random corners in Bandar Sunway. Taylor’s College students are frequent customers here due to the place’s affordable price, (as low as RM 4.50 for the ayam penyet & RM6.50 for a complete set of chicken, rice & drink!) If you’re looking a plate of wholesome Nusantara flavour, do give this stall a visit.
    Tips

The route to this outlet is pretty complicated but get to Mentari Court & look for a motorcycle service store. It’s tucked into the far end of the shoplots.

    Things to expect

A very humble, low-key, food court-ish atmosphere. This means that there are no air-conditioned indoors or fancy chairs.

    Best with

Order Extra Joss, a specialty drink to go along with the dish.

    Price

    RM4.50
