Best Asam Laksa In PJ

Written by Updated ago

Mention the word “asam laksa” and the next word that instantly sprung to mind is “Penang” since both combined words are practically synonymous to each other. So, what makes asam laksa in Penang such a talked-about dish anyway? Here’s why: this popular Malaysian spicy-and-sour noodle dish lies on the addictiveness of the broth itself. Then there’s the shredded or fish chunk derived either from sardine or mackerel (ikan kembung) and mixed over a number of condiments that helps enhance the overall flavour. Among the condiments are mint leaves, lemongrass, red chillies, sliced pineapples, lettuce and onions. Last but not least is the aromatic spoonful of thick prawn paste used as topping to complete the scrumptious taste of asam laksa. Now that you have the visual of a perfect assam laksa, why not spot the best places for it?

Although O&S Restaurant may look like a typical mom-and-pop coffee shop, it serves some of the best Penang street foods ever found in the PJ area. And this includes the much sought-after laksa stall which sells asam and curry laksa. For a bowl of asam laksa, you’ll be satisfied with the generous inclusion of prawn paste, sliced pineapples, onions, cucumbers and mint leaves. Best of all, this asam laksa is packed with some savoury chunks of mackerel fish served over springy noodles and robust broth.

The first thing you’ll notice upon ordering the stall’s Kedah asam laksa is that the owner serves the dish on a plate instead of a typical bowl. But what really matters is the taste itself, and the asam laksa passes that mark with flying colours. All the usual ingredients that you’ll come to expect for asam laksa are all here, while the mouth-watering broth is a triumph of slurp-worthy goodness.

Expect long queue during dinnertime, so come early if possible.

Despite the steep price, you can expect big portions for a bowl of asam laksa at Little Penang Kafe. Of course, being big isn’t enough to justify the price. And thankfully, the asam laksa here doesn’t disappoint. The broth is as full-bodied as a good Penang-styled asam laksa should be, and the taste is pleasant enough without being too sour or too spicy. With a decent amount of fish chunks and loads of zesty ingredients, this is one satisfying meal if you pay a visit to this place.
    Tips

Another version of laksa – known as “Siamese Lemak Laksa” – which comes with thick coconut milk-based gravy, is only available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

    Things to expect

Generous portion, especially for the main course meals. While many stalls prefer recycled oil when come to deep-frying fried pastries, Mr. Chiam favours fresh cooking oil instead to retain the food quality.

Although Nyonya Colors is popularly known for its homemade Nyonya kuih, their asam laksa offering is equally recommended as well. On the sour scale, the laksa broth is sufficient enough to tantalise your taste bud and at least, it’s not too spicy to make you reach out for a glass of water. Apart from the delectable spicy-and-sour delish of asam laksa, there’s the curry-based Yellow Laksa as well.

Upon stepping into this famous outlet, one should never give their signature asam laksa a miss. Filled with deliciously thick and flavourful broth, it has a satisfying combination of sourness and spiciness that complements well with the rice noodle. With an abundance of ingredients such as shredded fish, pineapple, cucumber and onions added together into the mix, the asam laksa offering here is almost as good as the one sells in a roadside stall.

Located in front of the Sea Park market, there is one particular food truck that sells an awesome bowl of asam laksa. Not only the asam laksa here is both fragrant in its smell and taste, but also packed with enough flavour that’ll make you crave for more. This is especially true since the inclusion of thick shrimp paste makes the asam laksa all the more wonderful to enjoy for.

Heritage Village offers plenty of Penang Nyonya cuisine, and one of the must-try dishes in the menu is the Heritage Assam Laksa. Thanks to the potent mix of herbs and spices such as lemongrass and mint leaves, the tangy broth is both aromatic and appetising. The thick rice noodles that soaked within the broth helps enhance the overall texture of the dish. A bountiful of goodies such as fish chunks, shredded pineapple, cucumber, lettuce and onion made this asam laksa a wholesome culinary experience.

Upon looking at the dictionary, the word “decanter” means a bottle with a stopper used to serve wine or water. At the first glance, Decanter might look like a fancy-named Western restaurant/café but you’ll be surprised that this dining place serves one of the best asam laksas in PJ. Laksa lovers will be more or less pleased with the abundance of shredded fish dunked inside the broth, which tastes as divine as it looks. Topped with a few sprinkles of ginger flower (bunga kantan), it gives an extra zing to the already-aromatic taste of the asam laksa.
