Best Tong Sui in PJ

Written by Updated ago

If you've grown up in a Chinese family, you must have had tong sui before. Red bean and peanut soups, longan with fungus, gui ling gou, etc. are common desserts to end an 8-course-meal during annual Chinese New Year dinners at Chinese restaurants. The idea of tong sui is actually to 'wash down' all those kung pao chicken, sweet and sour pork and garlic ginger fish that you stuffed your face in. With that said, let's get onto discovering the best tong sui in Petaling Jaya!

Rankings of all participants as visible on our listings are solely voted by you, our beloved readers. With that said, we would encourage you to please vote for your preferred participants in order to ensure their rightful positions ranking-wise on our portal. Thank you!

The tong sui in Cili 8 is certainly eye candy for those ready to dig into these sweet treats. The red bean tong sui has a consistent dark brown red colour with small bits of red bean that float to the top of the bowl. The black glutinous rice with fresh coconut milk has a lot of colour contrast with different elements, namely the dark coloured rice and the lighter coconut milk. All of the tong sui items are served in a nice and small China porcelain bowl. As far as taste and flavours are concerned, the bowls of tong sui are steaming hot, and are light. It becomes very clear from the red bean tong sui that the intention is to highlight the natural flavours of the red bean, while the balance of flavours between the coconut milk and the black glutinous rice wok in a similar fashion.

    Tips

Take each spoonful carefully as it is quite hot

    Things to expect

More coconut milk can be added to the black glutinous rice and coconut milk bowl

    Best with

The tong sui works great as a light meal or a dessert after a spicy bowl of pan mee

    Price

    RM4.50 to RM4.90

An obvious frontrunner, K.T.Z. Food in SS 2 is one of the longest surviving eateries in the bustling area and thus, is almost always packed. K.T.Z. in its name actually stands for 'remember to eat' when directly translated. Well, we can't agree more with that when it comes to eating good food here! The place opens till late and many tend to head here for a sweetly satisfying supper.

    Tips

Sometimes the desserts can sell out.

    Things to expect

    People... A lot of people.

    Best with

    Sago loh and tong sui.

A favourite local kopitiam amongst white collared workers within Damansara Uptown, the family restaurant rose to fame for its signature Wan Tan Mee. Other dishes have also also been vocalized and that includes the homemade tong sui! We love the red bean glutinous rice soup which is absolutely lush, sweet, thick and silky smooth. The pak kor yi mai mak chuk is another common favourite and is also a popular order even in the morning! Speaking of which, it's without a doubt that tong sui is the only dessert we can have in the morning without getting an upset tummy later in the day!

    Tips

Weekday lunch hours can be brutal.

    Things to expect

    A crowded place.

    Best with

Mak chuk (wheat porridge) and wan tan mee.

Originated from Hong Kong, Hui Lai Shan claims to serve healthy desserts while not shying away from sweet tooth. We love how you can have your classic tong sui with a twist, such as the 'Luscious Ruby' which has lotus seed and longan in red bean soup and 'Local Fusion' which has yam, sweet potato, taro, sago and tapioca balls in coconut milk. Even better, most of these are served either hot or cold. So even at the end of a scorching hot or sweather weather day, you can cool down or warm up with yummy tong sui!
