Literally translated as trader’s rice, nasi dagang has certainly been a sleeper hit since the early days. This Kelantanese delicacy may appear seemingly simple yet each mouthful bursts to the fore with distinctive flavours and fragrance. Speckled red grains is steamed with coconut milk, ginger shreds, fenugreek seeds, lemongrass and dash of herbs, offering a symphony of earthy and feisty punch. It was typically served with fish, vegetable pickles, toasted grated coconut, hard-boiled egg and fish crackers, and thanks to the march of time, one can now expect a range of delectables sides, just like nasi kandarNasi Dagang may not be ubiquitous in Penang, however, renowned spots below transport you to the East Coast via your palate.
