Best Dim Sum in Ipoh

Written by Updated ago

Born of Taiwanese origin but emerged in Southern China, dim sum is served in small bite-sized portions and is synonymous to 'yum cha' in Hong Kong. Although dim sum is meant to accompany tea, many cultures began to serve dim sum as early as five in the A.M and even till dinner time. Eventually, dim sum became an all-time favourite, literally. If you stay in or plan to visit Ipoh, check out these hot spots for the best dim sum in town.

Only opened till mid-noon, Restoran Foh San is one of the extremely well-known dim sum houses in town. The place is rather grand looking compared to the other regular dim sum shops but prices are still competitive. Foh San stands firm against its competitors on the same street and is usually packed in the morning till noon. While the crowd dies down towards closing, expect to be potentially disappointed with some of the all-time favourite dim sum dishes to have already run out by then. Despite mixed reviews since its relocation in 2009, Foh San is still running fast and strong. The company also makes their own signature Mooncakes that sell like hotcakes especially during the Mid Autumn Festival!

Another famous dim sum restaurant, Ming Court is extremely packed especially during weekends and holidays. Either come really early or really late to avoid competing for tables. The dim sum here is not served in steam wooden baskets unlike other dim sum restaurants. While many recommend Ming Court, the restaurant is located on the same street as two other big dim sum shots. Therefore, expect to hear mixed reviews as different people will throw their never ending opinions and comparisons between the 'big 3'.

    Tips

    No queue system.

    Things to expect

Strangers eyeing you till you leave.

With ample seating and fine interior, Royal China Restaurant (previously known as Tai Thong) is a fancy spot to head over to for your dim sum fix. Albeit its higher prices, quality is ensured, taste is divine and environment is comfortable. While some think that the restaurant is overrated, different people have different opinions, right? But one thing is for sure - Royal China is almost always fully packed with patrons. Therefore, we reckon there has just got to be something really special about this place. Afterall, no eateries can survive without its continuous support from fellow foodies.

Open for breakfast only, the restaurant has been sustaining comfortably over the years even without operating for a whole day. Served fresh and piping hot, portions are also generous and flavours are not compromised. Sun Kim Aik is one of the more favorable spots for breakfast amongst locals. Prices are reasonable and thus, the restaurant attracts the mass even from as early as 5AM. When traveling, go where the locals go!

Highly hyped, Chooi Yue is specialized in dim sum and has circled around social media since the beginning of the trend. The Liu Sha Bao is said to be especially delicious with signature fillings such as pandan lotus besides the traditional Salted Egg Yolk. On top of that, the pao here are also very loved among goers. Prices are affordable too. Just like any other renowned restaurants, the waiting line and incoming crowds at Chooi Yue can be unforgiving.

    Tips

Tucked in Ipoh Old Town, Ying Fa Restaurant is underrated in today's social media for the best dim sum in Ipoh. While the dim sum are not amazing to the point where your legs go limp, it's good enough for the restaurant to be often packed by the locals who have been here for a long time... We're talking about our grandparents' generation. The restaurant has been around for a long time and has clearly made a name among the earlier generations that did not rely on the Internet for foodhunts. We reckon that already says quite a bit.

    Tips

The restaurant also serves noodle-of-the-day that varies each day.

    Things to expect

    Affordable and reasonable.

Restoran Yoke Fook Moon Non halal 01f78899591256b47a2708a65f6538333b86089a30fbd22545a41deece4ea490

Another one of the 'Big Three' dim sum makers in Ipoh, Yoke Fook Moon pretty much takes all the night crowds simply because it is one of the very few restaurants that open for dim sum at night. However, that's not the reason why the eatery became a food hub. The real reason lies in the dim sum itself. Claimed by many to be their favourite, it is not a breeze to win that title especially in Ipoh whereby there are many famous dim sums around within a smaller radius. Although service has been criticized, Yoke Fook Moon is still fully grounded and maintaining its reputation (in dim sum, that is).
    Tips

A variety of dim sum fun available including noodle dishes.

    Things to expect

    Perhaps some bad service...

    Best with

Egg tart and Char Siew Bao.
