We don’t know whether you realize it or not, but Malaysians have become more and more health conscious day by day. However, having to find a restaurant, café, or bakery that offers healthy food made with natural ingredients can be quite a hustle. In Penang or better known as food heaven, you can find a small humble bakery named Yin's Sourdough Bakery & Café that serves healthy sourdough bread and pastries that is made by only using unbleached flour, water and salt. For those who are not sure what sourdough means, here’s a brief explanation: "Sourdough is naturally sour due to lactic acid produced by Lactobacillus bacteria during the fermentation process. Compared to yeast bread, sourdough allows easier breakdown of otherwise-indigestible phytic acid in bread."

Opened in 2013, the café interior is filled with charming lanterns to give a calm and warm feeling along with some green plants hanging above. As you walk into the café, you can smell the wonderful scent of breads and baked goods available at the counter such as cinnamon rolls with raisins and chopped walnuts, coconut and pineapple sourdough buns and bagels covered with poppy and sesame seeds. For lunch, their regular customers always go for the Rotkraut grilled chicken and cheese. It has a generous layer of grilled chicken, mozzarella, purple cabbage, and all set with a perfect toasted loaf.

If you want to visit this place on a relaxed evening, chilling at a corner while having a delicious bun and warm tea, you can go for coconut or Polo pineapple buns. For a heavier plate, try the big portion French toast that costs only RM7.90 or a beetroot cream cheese bagel for RM5. Not only does this place produce good quality healthy bread, but they are also most importantly, delicious. So if you have time to drop by, don’t forget to say Hi to Yin who is busy in the kitchen doing some flour-dusted magic.
