    Ayam Brand: Tuna Mayonnaise

With over twenty variations of tuna flavours, Ayam Brand is one of the most famous brands in Malaysia when it comes to canned tuna. The packaging is in a chequered vibrant blue, with the classic rooster brand logo, it exudes familiarity for a brand that has been around in Asia since 1892. Ayam Brand Tuna Mayonnaise has a soft texture, smooth enough to use as a spread for sandwiches. The crunchiness from the bits of onions and pickled cucumber that is mixed in with the mayo is a pleasant difference to the overall texture of the tuna blend. Note that you can taste all the major ingredients in every bite; the tuna, mayonnaise, onion and cucumber, salty and peppery, all in one can.

Ayam Brand: Tuna Chunks in Water

Another of many tuna versions of Ayam Brand, this can is the classic chunks of tuna in water. Compared to brine that has a high sodium content, this version is less so but still maintaining some sodium in the mixture. The tuna chunks stays together pretty well, that also contribute to its chewy texture. You can get the prominent tuna taste as it contains no other elements other than tuna chunks, water and salt. The amount of the salty water is around half of the can so the tuna stays well preserved in taste and chunkiness.

TC Boy: Tuna Solid in Brine

If you are looking for an authentic taste of tuna go for TC Boy’s tuna in, wait for it, brine. Solidly packed in salt water, the can is literally filled with chunks of tuna fillet massively cut for the original taste of the white meat to stick around. The brine is supposedly to improve the flavour and moisture content of the cuts which of course it will definitely retain the dampness. Every little bite is filled with juicy meat – who would not want that?

    Rex: Chilli Tuna

Rex is a seafood company that has gained Jakim’s ‘Halal’ sign that ensures the trustworthiness of each of its products. Same goes to its tuna brands; Rex’s Premium Quality Chilli Tuna is the must-have spicier version of tuna fish. In the proper chilli way, this can of tuna packed quite a punch in smell and taste. The first bite would bring out the prominent chilli oil flavour that would lead to hotness at the back of your mouth if you were less careful. There is quite a lot of water in the mixture but this actually lessens the oiliness of the chilli. It has a texture of flaky chunks that easily disintegrates and mixed together with the oil and water. That coupled with visible coriander pieces makes this a complete meal to share and enjoy.

It could be made into a main or side dish to enjoy with rice or bread.

Ayam Brand: Deli Spread with Tuna

Feeling like munching on a relaxed Saturday evening? Try spreading the Ayam Brand Deli Spread with Tuna on bread or cracker. This product will not only fill your empty stomach, but it is also ideal for light munching. Mixed with mayonnaise and pickle cucumber, this canned tuna is a very good source of Omega 3, Selenium, Niacin and Vitamin B6 and B12. Did we mentioned that it is also 30% reduced in fat? Such an ideal choice for people who are particular on what they are eating. Non-tuna fans, would love this product due to the strong taste of mayonnaise compared to the tuna itself.

    Rex: Tuna Spread with Mayonnaise

Upon first looking at the can of mayonnaise tuna from Rex, one will notice the serving suggestion on the side of the can. This is a great feature of the cover as it helps the user know where and how they can even begin to enjoy it. This can of tuna has a good balance of chunky and flaky, giving a all-rounded textural experience. The tuna itself still retains a lot of flavour and freshness, while the mayonnaise complements that well with its slight sweetness and richness. This greatly helps give a full yet balanced flavour overall. In short, Rex Tuna Spread is the great blend of mayonnaise and tuna that will work well in your sandwiches.

Marina: Tuna Chunks in Vegetable Oil

Talk about oiliness! Marina really outdoes everything else. Even so, the amount of oil does not overwhelm the freshness of tuna chunks in it. With what used to be white meat has now turned into brown due to the amount of oil inside, the chunks of meat still manage to retain their authenticity and juiciness. Ideal for cooking, the tuna is served in bulk of solidness of which exactly why it is perfect to be paired with salads. As the strips on the fillet is still evident, totally reassuring on its credibility.

TC Boy: Sandwich Delite Tuna in Mayonnaise

Who would have thought that tuna in mayonnaise can get any better than what is usually offered. This specific product of TC Boy does not only contain mere tuna with mayo, it is also packed with corn kernel, bits of carrots, and onion – all were mixed in water chestnut. Although the chestnut is not obvious to the taste, however this product centres on low-fat ingredients to be packed together, promoting a healthier option for consumers.

    Marina: Chilli Tuna

The colour scheme used for the can of chilli tuna from Marina is a deep red, which is quite apt for the flavour. When the can is opened, the liquid base looks fairly light compared to other cans of chilli tuna. It also has smaller bits of spring onions, chilli and much more. Upon the first bite, the spiciness hits early on, and slowly heightens with time. This will certainly work for those who are looking for a bit of kick in their serving of tuna. The spiciness does not overwhelm the tuna enough to nullify its juiciness and freshness, and instead both elements work well together. So if you are looking for a can of tuna that packs some heat, give Marina Chilli Tuna a try.

    Rex: Tuna Flakes in Oil

Upon first glance of a can of tuna flakes in oil from Rex, it makes it very clear to the consumer of the consistency of the tuna flakes in the can, which helps set the pace for consumption. One thing that's easy to notice when you first open the can is that there isn't an excess of oil used as the base for the tuna. This is also reflected in the taste as the oil does not overpower the the juiciness and the freshness of the tuna. The oil helps to make the fresh flavour of the tuna richer, while not overpowering. Rex Tuna Flakes in Oil have done a good job in striking the balance between the oil base and tuna flakes, and have done it better than most.

    Bumble Bee: Chilli Tuna

Your first impression for this one would not be so great. The packaging can be improved and the tuna itself looks like ‘rendang’. But wait until you try it. Bumble Bee Chilli Tuna has a nice taste to it with just the right amount of spiciness. When it comes to the texture, the tuna looks mashed which makes it perfect to be use as a bread spread or a sushi filling. This American-based brand can be considered as underrated for its delicious taste.

TC Boy: Tuna with Chilli Padi

Spicy Tuna lovers will love the twist on this TC Boy Tuna with Chilli Padi. The addition of celery in the mix of tuna and oil gives a fresh balance to the taste. This one is sweet yet the spiciness kind of balances the taste just the right amount. It’s not too spicy though comparing with other brands. This particular one is on the smooth side in terms of texture and it is packed with lots of flavours. For its balance of spiciness and sweetness I reckon this is an all rounder and will cater to various tastes. This would be great on toast, on its own or even for two - three portions of spicy tuna pasta.
