Best Bak Kut Teh in Shah Alam

To many Malaysians, Bak Kut Teh is a local food that works best in two ways - either for breakfast or for supper. When people think about BKT, a first place that comes to mind is Klang. Shah Alam may be the last few places in Klang Valley to check out for BKTs, but lately with the growing Chinese community and developments, it's no surprise to see several BKT eateries popping around Shah Alam.

    Teow Feng at Sri Muda is actually a secondary branch as it's primary parent shop resides from Kampung Subang. if you've been to the older branch then you should know that Teow Feng offers undeniably good 'foo chuk'. Upon ordering, you'd notice the claypot full of broth to be covered in a blanket of yummy 'foo chuk'. The 'foo chuk' was very smooth and soft, having soaked up the BKT soup. Unfortunately they don't really serve a large variety of pork organs here. 

    Tips

    It is located along the few shoplots away from Public Bank.

    Things to expect

    Only go for the 'foo chuk' if you are a fan. Broth-wise, it's quite average.

    Best with

    Some vegies can be a good add on.

    BKT at Ah Seng is served piping hot on a large claypot, and you can expect many customers to be slurping the hot herbal broth during lunch hours (that's their peak time). Instead of having soft, cooked 'foo chuk' in your broth, Ah Seng's 'foo chuk' is rather less cooked and more crisp-like. Some might not enjoy it but we'd say its alright (more texture after all). Soup-wise; they aren't the strongest herbal BKT in town but it's definitely decent enough to have many returning locals.

    Tips

    Ask for 'foo chuk' in a seperate side order. We reckon it tastes better.

    It's a pretty run-down shop.

    Funnily enough, their other main dishes are pretty popular. The Asam Fish and Ginger Chicken is a must try.

    Most BKT places are famous (or at least known for) hot broths and fragrant herbal flavors; but that is not the case with Teck Kee. Their dry BKT is actually quite popular and is a preferred favorite when compared to the soup version. For one, the dry BKT is much spicier, flavorful (heavy usage of dried chili and black soy sauce) and goes pretty darn well with rice. 

    Tips

    Oh, did we mention that their rice isn't just any plain rice, but aromatic onion oil rice?

    Reasonably priced BKT.

    Best with

    Another recommended dish to go with your BKT is the ginger wine chicken.

    The unique attribute of Pao Xiang is that their bak kut teh is served in sizes to suit 1 pax. Unlike many other local bak kut tehs in Malaysia, the version served here offers individual meat options. Meaning, if you order pork ribs, then that portion shall contain just pork ribs. To describe the BKT taste; their broth has a rich flavor of herbs and spices, with meat cooked nicely and tender enough. For non-fatty meat eaters, Pao Xiang offers lean meat (Pai Kut and also Luan Kut) for only RM 9.50 per serving. The size of the ribs here are huge - proves that Pao Xiang does not cut corners on their food portion at all.

    Tips

    Not exactly a tip, but because the meat are packed fully in a bowl, it's quite hard to dip your 'yau char kuey' in the soup.

    Things to expect

    The shop is set up in a more elegant coffeeshop kind of environment, but still air conditioned-less.

    The BKT goes well with the stir-fry 'Yau Mak'.
