New Lane Hawker Centre is the heaven of food for Penang folks. Operating only during late evening until late night, this place is filled with food stalls on pushcarts outside an indoor eating area. The concept is pretty simple; you will first need to order from the hawkers and they will deliver it to your table. Expect to be seated on multi-coloured plastic tables and chairs on the roadside. Here, you can have a variety of authentic street food including char kuey teow, chee cheong fun, and even porridge.

Among the local’s favourite would be the Congee – a Chinese porridge that consists of rice instead of oats, that makes it a satisfying, hearty meal. You can pair it with various side dishes such as fresh crab, eggs, pork, or ginger chicken. If you are new to the Chinese cuisine scene, this one is basically the ultimate Chinese comfort food. Next up, the very famous Hokkien Mee. However, in Penang their version of this dish can be quite different - it is called Prawn Noodles (or Har Mee). Penang Hokkien Mee is made of egg noodles and rice noodles fried with egg, slices of pork, prawns and squid, decorated with vegetables, small pieces of lard served with chili sauce on a spoon.

Another must-try dish here is the Curry Mee. With only RM4, you can get a pretty large portion of curry mee that is full of flavours and not very spicy. In the bowl, you will get lots of pig’s blood cubes, cockles, tofu and cuttlefish. Besides that, you can also try the satay and chicken wings for a lighter meal. The locals and tourists usually come to New Lane Hawker Centre to experience good authentic Penang street food at affordable prices while getting to know the people and culture here. So, why don’t you drive over to New Lane Hawker Centre and experience it yourself!
