De Tai Tong Dim Sum George Town

This humble corner shop is nestled in George Town, Penang. It is famous for serving Dim Sum throughout the day, from early in the morning till at night when they draw up the binds. They also serve Chinese-style noodle and rice dishes for those who want to get their fix of carbohydrate. It is just a short walk away from Prangin Mall and Komtar. The interior is simple but fairly comfortable, with concrete floor and plastic chairs characteristic of hawker shops and rattling ceiling fans to cool patrons down from the scorching Malaysian heat.

The staffs who mainly comprise old ladies are extremely friendly and attentive. You just have to ask, and they will give you a long list of what they recommend as the best dishes in the shop. Upon arriving, they will take your order of beverages. Chinese tea is the default beverage served here with a wide variety of tea. The staffs will be pushing the dim sum and dessert cart around so that you can make your choices. Their dumplings are plump with ingredients, with the prawns in the Har Gau (prawn dumpling) fresh and succulent. The meat in the Siew Mai (pork dumpling) is tender and sweet. Do give the Loh Mai Kai a try, which consists of glutinous rice and chicken pressed down into a metal bowl using a ladle. To eat, overturn the bowl so that the pile of rice drops on your plate. It tastes good with chilli sauce.

For dessert, do try their crunchy and buttery egg tarts or sweet and refreshing Longan Tau Fu Fa. For those who want a main dish, do go for their Fish Head Beehoon and Pork Rib Noodle.
