Egyptian cuisine hasn’t made it’s presence entirely known in Malaysia, while it’s analogous Middle Eastern and Arabic counterparts are more well recognised. The clear exception to this rule is Restaurant Wadi Hana Elarabi, an Egyptian and Arabic restaurant located in Taman Desa Rahmat, Johor. This restaurant is the brainchild of Fazaiwati, a native Egyptian who was an accountant with one of the Big Four accounting firms before her love of Egyptian cuisine led her to open Wadi Hana Elarabi with her all-Egyptian crew. Speaking of the crew, Head Chef Amr from Egypt (who has worked 7 years at the Intercontinental Hotel in Cairo before coming to Johor Bahru) leads the kitchen at Wadi Hana Elarabi.

As far the Egyptian delights served here, customers can enjoy starters like the fattoush salad, the soup of the day, and flatbread with hummus dip. For the main courses, there’s a heavy emphasis on rice dishes, especially in the case of their best selling dishes, namely the mandy chicken rice and lamb makloubeh rice. These rice dishes always come with a serving of spicy dip to add more flavour and heat to the rice dishes. An interesting thing to note is that the majority of the dishes contain a red-purplish “sumac” spice, a grounded preserved shrub used to season and flavour many Egyptian dishes.

Restaurant Wadi Hana Elarabi also serves some great dessert like Umm Ali, an Egyptian bread pudding. So if you’re looking to experience Egypt through great food and hospitality, Restaurant Wadi Hana Elarabi is certainly the place to go.
