This establishment is usually known for their chicken rice, but many actually go there for wantan mee, which gives a satisfying thumbs up in taste. The crowd usually comes in during lunch hour but even so, you won’t have any issues finding a table if you’re wanting to grab a quick bite. You have the option of choosing roast chicken or char siew (or both!) depending on your preference. The meat on the char siew is lean and doesn’t carry much fat at all. As for the sui kao, the usual pork stuffing can be swapped for prawn instead, if you prefer the latter. The meal is great as a whole and is definitely worth a try!
    Tips

Avoid lunch hour as it’s their busiest period.

    Things to expect

The smell of recycled oil sticks to your clothing and if you’re there for a long time.

    Try the chicken wantan mee.

If sweet char siew is how you roll, then you’re gonna go crazy for this place. Patrons swear on these little chunks of honey caramelized meat, each with the perfect amount of lean and fatty bits. Here’s a fun fact for you: the sui kao are made hourly by hand so if you’re the type who fusses about freshness, then fret not! Each dumpling is stuffed with a combination of minced pork, prawns, and black fungus. Some argue that two pieces aren’t enough! The siew yoke on the other hand is nothing to shout about. The texture is rather tough so customers would usually just stick to ordering char siew.
    Tips

Sui kao (dumplings) are a MUST TRY!

    Things to expect

The place is usually packed, even during weekdays, which also means parking is always a challenge. Food is also on the pricey side.

Another family business going way back to the 1920s, Toong Kwoon Chye is operated by Madam Yap, a third generation shop owner who’s still dedicated to serving her grandfather’s signature wantan mee. Unlike the traditional black sauce version of this dish, their specialty is simply curry sauce over plain noodles. And instead of char siew, its braised mushrooms and chicken feet (char siew and wantan are options too). Noodles can be served in soup or dry, depending on your preference.
    Tips

Have a chat with Madam Yap and you’ll probably be able to catch the history about how it all started.

    Things to expect

Occasional inconsistency with their food flavours.

Ask your parents for a recommendation and the name Koon Kee would probably top their list. This worthy contender has been in business since 1942 and is now operated by the third generation. Despite all those years, their signature wantan mee still stands the test of time. They have been in the same location since they began and as for the interior, it looks like your everyday hawker shack. Patrons especially love the handmade noodles which are fine and springy. Some may not be too crazy about the portion and price per plate of wantan, they have to be doing something right because the crowd keeps coming!
    Tips

This narrow shop is hidden behind the street vendors. Make sure to keep an eye out!

    Things to expect

The shop looks really old and cleanliness isn’t up to par; food here is on the pricier side.

Wantan Mee Stall at Changkat Tong ShinNon halal 01f78899591256b47a2708a65f6538333b86089a30fbd22545a41deece4ea490

TChangkat Tong Shin Wan Tan Meehis little hawker stall is located right at the corner of Tengkat Tong Shin, parallel to Jalan Alor. It’s said to have one of the best tasting wantan mee in KL, and the crowd that flocks there for supper time will vouch for that. The man behind the meal is affectionately known by patrons as ‘Wantan Mee Uncle’. His quiet disposition and curt responses may come across as rude to some but he makes up for it through his noodles. Most would comment that uncle’s wantan mee is good as a whole, so there’s no pinpointing a specific aspect of this dish that stands out. Even so, people love it and are willing to wait up to 40 minutes for a plate or two!
    Tips

Uncle has no definite opening or closing times, and can choose to take the night off without forewarning.

    Things to expect

It’s grungier than your average hawker stall and expect a long waiting time.

    Best with

Nothing in specific, the dish as a whole is great!

They say to be the best, you have to learn from the best; and that’s exactly what they did. The owner’s husband learned how to specially roast char siew from a Hong Kong chef and ever since, they’ve been selling wantan mee that people rave about. If you guessed that the secret is in the char siew marinade, then you’re absolutely right. The flavour has just the right amount of sweetness and the texture of the char siew is the type that melts in your mouth – even the lean bits! Some may not be a fan of the wantan dumplings and noodles, saying that they’re of mediocre quality but best to give it and shot and judge for yourself!
    Tips

To avoid the big crowd, head over during the weekdays.

    Things to expect

Waiting time can be 30 minutes or more on a busy day.

Located just a stone’s throw away from Kuala Lumpur and Genting Highlands, the sight of this market is constantly buzzing with people after fresh produce, or those wanting to fill their stomachs with yummy hawker food. The wantan mee stall is popular amongst the regulars there, especially for its homemade wantan dumplings. The succulent minced pork is wrapped in a thin, soft blanket wrap and served in flavoured soup. The dry version of this dish is more popular as the black sauce compliments the handmade noodles well.
    Tips

Get there early, as most items will sell out by 11am.

    Things to expect

A variety of stalls from different races and heritage; truly 1Malaysia! ; finding a table is a challenge so most customers pack to-go.
