Sambal Udang, or Sambal Prawns in iEnglish is a dish that is commonly found in most Malay and Indonesian restaurants. A simple combination between two elements - sambal and prawns, is amazingly delicious, and a dish worthy of compliment to steamy rice. On some occasions, though it's more often that not, petai are used in the dish as well. This gives it a richer, deeper and slightly bitter edge that just helps cut through all that spice and richness. All and all, we know that you're craving for some now, and here is a list of the best sambal udang in PJ.

Nyonya Signature
All hail petai lovers! What happens when you combine prawns and petai together? Sambal Udang Petai, of course! Here at Nyonya Signature, their Sambal Udang Petai is cooked with generous amount of large juicy prawns, sambal cili merah and petai over a banana leaf, a bed of greens and cili merah cuts sprinkled on top for garnish. The prawns are cooked to perfection with sweet yet a petai hue as well as tanginess to each bite. The tanginess comes from the sambal asam that they use to cook the prawns and petai together. This simple dish is perfect for petai devotees.

Village Park
Village Park may be famed for its nasi lemak and fried chicken, but their sambal udang too is quite the catch. It's a whole lot spicier than most and their prawns are really fresh. The sauce or rather, sambal they made is somewhat starchy or perhaps, gloopy instead of being watery. That's great especially when you wish to pour it over some rice. It's simple, spicy and goes great with almost any of their dishes.

Uncle Don's
Uncle Don's has been quite the hit lately, and there's only one reason for that - amazing food. Unlike most places, Uncle Don's version of the sambal udang is a whole lot sweeter, which caters to the non-spicy eaters out there (which by the way, is quite a number). Not only that, the portion is fairly huge with plenty of prawns served. It's sweet, savoury and ultimately addictive, and it works great with some warm rice. Add on a glass of Carlsberg and you're all set.

Mum's Place
Mum's Place, a restaurant you can call home - or well, something of that sort. It may not have the best design, nor do they have the best presentation in their dishes. What makes this place really good is simply its homeyness, affordability and of course, quality food. The sambal udang suffers no less, as it's well packed with a good heap of spices, which gives it that richness and heat. Apart from the sauce, the prawns too are cooked beautifully. It's a simple dish that packs in a whole lot of flavour, and something that you'll definitely not regret ordering.

The Tranquerah
The Tranquerah is a great place to be if you're in the mood for some awesome nyonya food. It's located in the quieter area of Kota Damansara - The Strand. Not the best location for a restaurant but hey, it's better than some other places. Anyway, onto their food. They have a wide range of delectable nyonya specialties, one of which includes the sambal udang. It has an incredible depth of flavour with all its seasoning and homemade sauce, with the prawns cooked to tender perfection. Not only that, the use of petai too gives it a richer, deeper and a whole lot more addictive taste profile. All and all, this dish is certainly worth the order and goes great with some warm white rice.
