Best Recommended Instant Black Coffee

Written by Updated ago

While it may not be everyone’s go-to beverage, there’s an unapologetic charm to a hot cup of black coffee (often referred to as Kopi “O” by the locals) that’s hard to find in any other beverage. Whether the brew originates from Melaka, Penang, Ipoh, or anywhere else, fans of this hot drink can’t get enough of the unfiltered and unforgiving strong, bitter coffee flavour; and actually see merit in it, especially in the mornings as it helps them stay awake to get through the long day of work that lays ahead. So here are a number of brands that should be in your pantry if you’re looking for a strong cup of Joe.

    Aik Cheong

The original black coffee from Aik Cheong has packaging that takes a simpler approach. It's completely rendered in gold and black, with an illustration of a hot coffee cup in the center. Another great thing about this packaging is that it has a small incision on the side to help with tearing the packet open. Once you do open said package, the coffee bag in it is well heaped with coffee powder. Upon the first sip, the one thing that stands out in the black coffee from Aik Cheong is the richness, which is slightly more prominent than other serving of black coffee out there, whilst retaining the strength one would expect from a cup of black coffee.

    Hang Tuah

The minimalist approach to the packaging of Hang Tuah's Uncang Kopi-O is a nice touch compared to the more vibrant packages of black coffee out there. The package features a split picture of coffee beans and a cup of black coffee in the background, with two coffee bags in the foreground; all of which are rendered in black and white. Speaking of the coffee bag, it isn't fully compressed with coffee powder, which makes movement of the coffee particles in the hot water easier. Upon the first sip, the strong coffee flavour hits you right away, with no sugar or excessive creaminess to get in the way of it.

Salute Brand Hailam Penang 2-in-1 Kopi O

Despite being another variant of locally distributed black coffee, Salute Brand's Hailam Penang 2-in-1 Kopi O is not one to be trifled with. Sporting a bright red packaging that is glaringly attractive, each and every sachet entails a consistently pungent scent of black coffee when opened. With a addition of hot water into the fray, the aroma is made more intense. Taste wise, the black coffee is more inclined toward the sweeter side of the spectrum as opposed to the bitter side but as far as a cup of rich black coffee is concerned, Salute Brand's black coffee really does pack an aromatic punch.

    Lico 2-in-1 Kopi-O

In terms of its black coffee, Lico has made quite an effort to ensure that this particular branch of coffee, usually known for its robust bitterness along with tinge of mild sweetness, is accessible to the masses as not every individuals are fond of the acquired taste found in black coffee variants. As opposed to being extremely bitter -a characteristic shared by coffee all around; the bitterness level of Lico's black coffee variant is capped at an all time low, and that somewhat accentuated the sweetness of the coffee which will otherwise be smothered by the bitter taste. The aroma is not entirely pronounced but the tell-tale scent of black coffee is present nevertheless. A slight hint of sourness might present itself from time to time, as consumers sip on further down the cup but overall, Lico's black coffee is pleasantly mild to the palate -as well as the wallet; as far as black coffees go.

    Ah Huat Kopi Kosong

When it comes to black coffee, Ah Huat's instant black coffee premix holds no quarters when it comes to having consumers taste the authenticity of roasted coffee in its purest form. Withholding the addition of sugar, this is one black coffee that only those who are partial to the acquired taste of bitterness would come to savour. With its pungent coffee scent discernible from the moment the sachet is unsealed, this cup of caffeinated goodness is your best friend when it boils down to attempts of staying awake. Of course, for the conventional sugary rush that is present in other black coffees, one can simply add in sugar to bring out the delectable sweetness.

    Sin Sing Coffee

The packaging of Sin Sing Coffee's Kopi-O is certainly one of the more colourful ones you'll come across. Coupled with a red and yellow colour scheme, a serving suggestion of a picture of a cup of black coffee with the coffee bag protruding is what makes up the bulk of the packaging. As far as the flavours are concerned, it doesn't have any sugar or source of richness to balance the strong coffee flavour as its not necessary. The bitter coffee taste isn't as overpowering as other servings of black coffee out there, making this a good cup of black coffee for the uninitiated.

Old Town Black Series 2-in-1 Coffee-O

Known to many as a purveyor of the sweeter, paler version of the coffee, Old Town White Coffee has decided to up its game in the coffee industry by venturing into the darker variant as well. Aptly dubbed the "Black Series", this particular 2-in-1 black coffee of Old Town is nothing short of perfection. As opposed to the sinfully sweet version of its white coffee, Old Town's rendition of black coffee kept the sweetness factor at a minimum, strong enough for one to attain the taste of sugary delight, while not overpowering the signature bitter taste derived from premium coffee beans. Balanced is the word to use here, when describing this truly sophisticated cup of black coffee.

    Penang 2-in-1 Kopi-O

A rendition of the popular Penang black coffee, all packed into a convenient sachet ready to be had on the go, Train Brand's Penang 2-in-1 Kopi O is quite the palate pleaser, when it comes to savouring local black coffee. Relatively cheap for its kind, each sachet emanates the tell-tale scent of the premium coffee beans used in making the coffee. Taste wise, the acquired taste of bitterness is slightly stronger than that of the sweetness. But not by a long shot hence the drink is still accessible to majority of the masses, black coffee aficionados and casual-coffee-enthusiasts alike.

    Nescafe

The packaging of the black coffee sachet from Nescafe pretty much has it all when it comes to good packaging. From the purple colour scheme, to the serving suggestion consisting of a picture of black coffee, as well as serving instructions and small incision on the side for easy opening, there's very little to complain about when it comes to the packaging. As far as the flavours are concerned, the coffee is certainly a much easier cup of black coffee to drink than others. This can be attributed to the inclusion of sugar, and the slight richness that's in the mix. Fortunately, all of this doesn't take away from the obvious caffeinated strength that's in the mix.

    Mr. Hainan Lao

The packaging of black coffee from Mr. Hainan Lao is kept pretty simple as it only features a picture of a kettle pouring water into an empty cup of coffee with a few roasted coffee beans placed on the side. The package also shows the appropriate for consumption. The bag of black coffee itself is well sized, with a decent amount of coffee in it. When hot water is poured into the cup with the bag, the strong coffee fragrance is very apparent. In the first sip, the strong coffee bitterness makes an appearance almost instantly. There isn't much in the way of creaminess, which makes sure the strength of the coffee is unhindered.

    Indocafe Coffee-O

In terms of its outlook, Indocafe's sachet of black coffee sports one of the most compact packaging amongst all the other contenders in the industry, allowing for easier storage and better travel convenience while still managing to provide all the vital nutritional values and product information to the masses despite its smaller size. Take a peek into the insides of the packaging and you will find your sense of smell assaulted with a strongly enticing aromatic scent of grounded coffee beans. Not entirely bitter to begin with, this particular Indocafe black coffee garners its reputation from the sourish tang derived from the roasted grounded beans. As such, it does contain the richness in which black coffee aficionados seek out with much enthusiasm. Presence of sugar help balance out the otherwise sour cup of coffee with a dash of sinful sweetness.
