If you ask any Malaysian or Singaporean
what they would like to have for tea, they would probably say Nyonya Kuih. If
you are not familiar with the term, it is actually a selection of small
desserts and munchies instigated by a Southeast Asian community – the Peranakan
folks. Which leads us to the next question – who are the Peranakan people? This
community were once a part of Malaysia and Singapore and the men is called as
Baba while the women are referred to as Nyonya. What makes them unique is that
they are basically Chinese people who embraced local cultures (Malay) into
their lifestyle which includes language, fashion and architecture.

A’Han Nyonya Kuih
As a family run business for decades, this shop is well known among the PJ neighbourhood. The interior of the shop is simple and not much of a décor. The concept is also straightforward – walk in, selects your favourite ‘kuih’, pay, and leave. The sweet delicacies offered here are a bit expensive but with the good, tasty and consistent flavours, it is value for money. Some of the highlights of this shop include the Pulut Tai Tai (blue-tinged glutinous rice served with coconut jam/kaya) and Rempah Udang/Pulut Udang (a savoury mix of spicy dried shrimps and grated coconut stuffed into glutinous rice roll, then wrapped with banana leaf).

This Singaporean based kopitiam is well known among Malaysian after opening up to 10 outlets around Malaysia. Besides offering the usual menu like other cafés such as white coffee, toast bread with butter and kaya, and half boiled eggs, this place also serves traditional Nyonya Kuih. Their freshly homemade kaya and rich kopi concocted from Columbian Arabica coffee beans remain their main selling point. Other dishes like Otak otak and Singaporean Mee Siam are also available on the menu.
