Best Nasi Briyani in KL

Written by Updated ago

This dish comes in so many almost identical names that you would twist your tongue pronouncing it one right after the other: biryani, biriani, briyani. Nasi Briyani is the label that we are comfortable with in describing the popular rice dish typically found in mamak or Indian restaurants. Branded as one of the favourite food staples among many Malaysians, it requires an extended cooking time to fulfil that desired flavour and aroma spawned from long-grain rice (basmati is most commonly-used), assorted spices, and meats (chicken, lamb or beef) or vegetables. Depending on the quality of the meal, you can eat the delicious rice on its own or together with curry and other delicious side dishes such as acar or raita (yoghurt with chopped cucumbers and spices). Thanks to its potpourri of rich ingredients, it helps stimulate appetite, and at the last bite, your tummy will acknowledge it as a satisfying, filling meal!

Once known as Restoran Sharifa back in the ‘70s, Restoran Mahbub has always been renowned for their tempting Nasi Briyani Madu (honey briyani rice). Here you’ll find the sweetness of the crispy honey-glazed fried chicken goes really well with their fragrant nasi briyani. Other dishes to look out for are the signature Nasi Briyani Buhara Kambing (Lamb Buhara Briyani Rice) and, if you have a bigger budget to splurge, their magnificent New Zealand Lamb Shank. In other words, feel free to add up as many curries and dishes as nothing fails to work together with the rice. So bring over a caveman appetite and relish all those meaty goodness.

    Gajaa at 8

Located in the heart of Bangsar, Gajaa at 8 is specialized in Indian cuisine, from soft naan to refreshing lassi, you name it. They have almost everything. However, the Kerala Chicken Briyani is a must try if you are here. Served in a clay pot, every serving has two big chunks of chicken hidden under the aromatic, appetizing colour of the briyani rice. Imagine how exciting your dining experience is, it is like digging up for treasure which is the two big chunks of tender, well-marinated chicken meat. I’m sure everyone agrees that a briyani is incomplete without the sides. Fear not, this dish is served with papadom and raita, which is yoghurt infused with spices and chopped vegetables. The papadom really makes this dish perfect as it adds a crunch to every bite.

    Tips

The chicken meat is hidden under the rice. So don't be alarmed when you're not seeing any chicken on the rice when the Kerala Chicken Briyani arrives at your table.

Fierce Curry House in Bangsar is a really popular place for banana leaf rice, but not just on the rice itself, but rather, the choices of curry along with their side dishes as a whole. However, one can enjoy the best of both worlds with their latest menu promo, the mix of banana leaf and nasi briyani, which has been quite the hit seller lately. Aromatically spiced Basmathi rice with an assortment of vegetables, curry and if you're generous enough, LOBSTER OR SCALLOPS, now that is a meal worth skipping diet for! Also, don't forget to try out some of their lassi!

Spice Garden is one of Malaysia's largest franchised Indian restaurants with 5 outlets in Malaysia and 1 in Macao. They have also been voted as one of the best Indian restaurants in Kuala Lumpur. There are a number of things that you should look for when you are here, and the first being the Nasi Briyani. It's slightly milder compared to most, but it still does deliver in flavour and texture. To accompany that, the Tandoori Chicken and Chicken Butter Masala are the perfect choice! Also, don't forget to try out their Garlic Naan, which is great as well.
