In authentic Malay cuisine, varieties are far from short and flavours are simple yet delicious. Conversely, with the amount of fame regular runners like nasi lemak, lontong and mee rebus have garnered, it’s pretty hard to look beyond to other contenders. But don’t make that rookie mistake, you’ve got to try mee bandung! Despite the name, it has no connection to Bandung, Indonesia and despite the identical appearance, mee rebus is a far cry for sure. Mee bandung is a drool-inducing combination of yellow noodles, drenched in a savoury broth made with shrimp paste, dried shrimp and assorted spices, and flavoursome toppings like plump prawns, egg, sliver of meat and vegetables. The best part? It does not burn a hole in your pocket. Muar is widely acclaimed for delectable servings of mee bandung but the food paradise of Malaysia has equally worthy contenders too.

Hassan Mee Kuah Udang & Sup Gearbox
This unassuming and spacious restaurant has captivated the hearts of many with their mee bandung.
