Best Fried Chickens in KL

Written by Updated ago

Kids love it. Adults enjoy it as well. The “it” in question is none other than fried chicken; you can say it’s like a national comfort food among all walks of life in Malaysia. Not only can you easily find this delicious poultry in fast-food restaurant, you can also locate them in various stalls, cafes and restaurants as well. So what makes fried chicken such a crowd favorite? First of all, the sight of a fried chicken itself is mouth-watering enough to make you crave for one. Then there’s the sensational feeling of crackling sound upon every bite on the crispy skin, right before you indulge deeper into the tender white meat. Fried chicken may have been known for its greasiness and high-cholesterol level, but of course, moderation is the key when it comes to savouring this guilty-pleasure food.

At first glance, the Cheras Velodrome seems like a sports facility for cycling. But look beyond it and you’ll notice it’s also home to many yummy Malay food stalls with one particularly good one – Restoran A. Hassan Sdn Bhd. This stall has all the usual dishes such as nasi kandar, but their main specialty is the signature Ayam Goreng Kampung (village fried chicken). Unlike the typical fried chicken, the ayam kampung is noticeably smaller in size but has firmer meat. This deep-fried delight is especially robust in taste, and pairs well with a plate of rice and other side dishes.
    Tips

This restaurant doesn’t open on Fridays.

The fried chicken itself is blessed with crispy skin, and tastes even better with its sweet-as-honey glaze! No doubt it’s a must-have dish if you happen to stop by here.

Since its introduction into the local market more than a decade ago, this famous hawker-stall style outlet has been mushrooming all around major shopping malls in the Klang Valley area alone. By now, many locals would recognise some of Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks’ signature foods such as mee sua and sweet plum potato fries. Another popular food worthy of a mention is their XXL Crispy Chicken. Like the name suggests, the fried chicken is particularly large in size and enough to be eaten on its own as a main course, especially if you have an average appetite. Best of all, it is served piping-hot upon order and deep-fried to golden brown perfection using special batter. The fried chicken is not only crispy, but the additional Oriental seasoning on the skin makes it more flavourful. The chicken meat, in the meantime, is tender enough till the last bite.

    Tips

Recently, the outlet has introduced a new food item known as Squid Ink Tempura.

The famous Pudu Wai Sek Kai is best known for many local Chinese foods like fried carrot cake, chee cheong fun, and one fried chicken hawker stall that you should totally stop by. Are you one that is picky with parts? Here you’ll get to choose from drumstick, wing, carcass, breast, thigh, feet and even butt (or more appropriately, “bishop’s nose”). Thanks to the mass popularity of K-Pop sensation that penetrated our local market these days, even Korean food is getting plenty of buzz! One of them is of course the Korean fried chicken from the award-winning KyoChon restaurant. Hailed all the way from South Korea, KyoChon is known for its MSG-free quality poultry and best of all, not as greasy as you would normally find in a typical fried chicken. This sensation comes in three types of flavours: “Original Soy Series”, “Red Series” and “Honey Series”. While both Original Soy and Red Series (glazed over with hot Korean red chilli peppers sauce) are decent enough, it is their honey-glazed fried chicken that is truly worth savouring for. It’s irresistibly crunchy to the bite and the sweetness of natural honey makes the dish all the more appetising. Upon ordering the fried chicken, you have an option of picking regular, medium or large size, while the chicken types, available with a choice of wingette and drumette, as well as drumstick.
    Tips

KyoChon’s brand of fried chickens is all cooked with canola oil using double-frying method to achieve its distinctive crispy crust.

Ipoh Steamed Tilapia in SauceNon halal 01f78899591256b47a2708a65f6538333b86089a30fbd22545a41deece4ea490

This place itself is more of a makeshift food stall sandwiched between the two shop lots along the alleyway, complete with zinc rooftop. If you’re asking why the funny name, it’s actually a direct translation from the Chinese signboard. The delicious steamed tilapia (or better known by the local Chinese as “fei zhou yu” or “African fish”) may get the credit here but many patrons frequent this stall for its signature salted egg fried chicken wings (and drumsticks). It might sound like a weird combination at first, especially for those who are so used to eating normal fried chicken, but a taste of this will have you agreeing on the recipe. Here, the chicken wings are deep-fried to perfection with the right level of crispiness, while matching well with the piquant flavour of the salted egg. Don’t be surprised if you end up addicted to them. I know I have.
    Tips

If you order the salted egg fried chicken wings, they are based on the number of pieces you want.

    Things to expect

This place is usually packed to the brim during dinner hour.
