Churros are slowly but surely becoming everyone’s favourite snack food and dessert in Malaysia, with the uprising modern cafe scenes around the country being the predominant platform to showcase this Spanish choux pastry goodness. A good serving of churros should have a good amount of sugar cover the caramelised exterior of the churro stick (which usually has star shaped ridges similar to a starfruit), which holds a soft and delectable centre. The churros are usually served with a helping of chocolate dipping sauce, but a number of other options can also be had. So without further ado, here are a number of places in Shah Alam that give this enjoyable dessert the TLC it deserves.

Tanah Aina Cafe
The churros and ice cream at Tanah Aina Cafe certainly look the part of a very delectable sweet treat. The dish is comprised of a churro basket that’s lightly dusted with icing sugar, with a scoop of ice cream right in the centre of the basket. Two cherries are placed on top of the ice cream scoop while a generous amount of chocolate sauce is poured on the plate. The first thing to note about this plate of churros is that the consistency of the churros are just right, where the exterior is crispy while the interior is soft, which creates a very pleasurable bite. The ice cream and chocolate sauce do a great job of adding moisture and more flavour to the churros which soak all of it up well.

Zawara Coffee @ Bukit Jelutong
Certified
halalThe churros served at Zawara Coffee can’t afford to be overlooked. For starters, the churros are perfectly shaped to be the ideal dessert finger food. On top of this, they’re coated well with sugar, and the sharper edges have a wonderful brown caramelisation. When you do take a bite into the churros, it’s a delightful experience as the crispy star shaped ridges give way for the fragrant and soft interior. The serving of churros is further elevated with the different dipping sauces available, namely caramel, butterscotch, and the perennial chocolate dip. For something more substantial, two scoops of ice cream can be had.

Kopimeo
More often than not, when one thinks of churros in Shah Alam, chances are they will likely mention Kopimeo, a well known establishment in the Shah Alam cafe scene. Kopimeo’s rendition of churros is kept pretty simple, with a number of “easy to pick up” churros sticks that are generously sprinkled with sugar and served with a side of chocolate dipping sauce. As far as the churros themselves go, it has that crispy yet soft texture that you look for when you bite into a good churro stick, and the chocolate sauce does a great job of adding another layer to the dish.

Mozer's
While the portion is on the smaller side (4 churro sticks to be exact), there’s still plenty to enjoy with the serving of churros available at Mozer’s. The first thing that’s apparent is the slightly larger thickness in the churro sticks, especially when compared to other servings of churros out there. This already indicates a lot more to enjoy with each and every bite. Then there’s the element of eye candy from the darker spots on the outside of the churros. As is that wasn’t enough, the churros come with two different dipping sauces (i.e. chocolate and peanut butter) which help to add additional flavour and give variations in each bite of the churros.

The Sumbs Cafe
Certified
halalIt almost goes without saying that the highlight at The Sumbs Cafe is the churros as its a hot favourite amongst the regulars at the cafe. While it is a rare occurrence, there’s still a propensity for the churros to run out at the cafe from time to time. What keeps customers coming back for more of The Sumbs Cafe’s rendition of churros is it’s simplicity. For starters, these snack food sized churros aren’t as heavily coated in sugar, which is a welcome change from the norm of enveloping the churro sticks in sugar; allowing the churros themselves to carry all the weight in terms of flavour. For more flavour and moisture, the quintessential side of chocolate dipping sauce makes an appearance.
