Best Korean Restaurants in Penang

Written by Updated ago

When most people think of Korean food, what comes to their mind is kimchi and a whole lot of banchans (side dishes). But that’s only a slice of the cake. Although Korean cuisine is usually an acquired taste, many Malaysians have grown to love Korean cuisine for its rare uniqueness. Their unique twists in common delights like fried rice, stews and grilled meats are nothing but delicious. Adhering to the growing demand, many new restaurants have evolved to a more modern and sophisticated Korean dining which also implements localised dishes suitable for the local Penangites. Just remember to go over with a hungry tummy.

Here, you should give a go at their Chuncheon Dakgalbi, spicy stir-fried marinated chicken with cabbage, onion, sweet potato and rice cake in a spicy red chilli sauce. Although a little pricey, average RM30 per meal, the portion and flavours justify it well. The best part is patrons can throw a haystack of cheese on top of the stir-fried goodness. Besides the main attraction here, there are other authentic Korean dishes to try too. Another plus point is their advance induction cooker, which does not create excessive smoke during cooking.

If you're in the mood for some traditional Korean dishes, then ShwimPyo at Plaza Ivory is certainly a place worth visiting. Don't expect much from the decor though as the place is as bare as it gets. Fortunately, the colour and vibrancy lies with their dishes for all their dishes are cooked with passion and love. From stews to rice and side dishes to desserts, everything here is as Korean as it gets. Additionally, the prices here are really reasonable and the portion is great! So in conclusion, Korean Cafe ShwimPyo is definitely a great place for simple and hearty Korean food.

Daorae Korean BBQ is without a doubt, one of the earliest Korean restaurant to have set foot in Malaysia, way before the rush of K-wave! Daorae is also one of the more prestigious restaurant as they only serve fairly premium meat, seafood and side dishes. You can also expect the service to be on point, where the waiters will do all the cooking for you. If you're confident or rather, prefer your own way of BBQing, by all means, just mention it to the staffs and they will allow you to do so. Last but not least, expect the prices to be a little higher than usual!

Chun Chuan Dak Gal Bi Korean RestaurantNon halal 01f78899591256b47a2708a65f6538333b86089a30fbd22545a41deece4ea490

Chun Chuan Dak Galbi Korean Food Restaurant is located at Vantage Desiran Tanjung, surprisingly close to a Daorae the competitor. The restaurant is opened and operated by a native Korean who had imported the famous Chun Chuan delicacy all the way to Penang. The infamous Dakgalbi comes with cabbage, Korean rice cake, sweet potato and a whole lot of chicken. The substantial element in this dish is the sweet and spicy seasoning sauce, aka Gochujang. The superb seasoning will surely blow your mind and taste buds! For extra oomph, do add ramen noodles and cheese into the delectable mix.

    Tips

Difficult to find as it's hidden at the corner of Vantage Desiran Tanjong.

    Things to expect

Not much of a variety here so sticking to dak galbi dishes will do.

Taking up a total of 4 shoplots, KO.B.Q Korean Restaurant at Precinct 10 is an absolutely beast! The massive size of the restaurant, coupled with their menu makes it one of the most attractive Korean dining restaurants in Penang. Unfortunately, they do not offer buffet but their set meals are fairly reasonable. They are also always having promotions, which helps them promote different sections of the menu. A cozy and fun-filled dining environment, fresh meat, seafood and vegetables, excellent service and reasonable pricing - what's not to love about KO.B.Q Korean Restaurant?

    Tips

    Reservation recommended.
