One of the most popular chicken rice in Malacca, Chung Wah is known for one awesome dish - chicken rice. A competitor on Jonker Street, Chung Wah's rice balls have been said to be rolled and made to perfection while the chicken is tender and tasty. Hence, the almost unending queues - waiting time can reach up to an hour during peak times! Full of locals and tourists, this is one of the best places to experience authentic Malaccan chicken rice.

Another tourist attraction, Hoe Kee is located at Jonker Street and thus, you bet it will be crowded. The chicken rice here is authentic with its ping-pong-ball sized rice balls. Service has been said to still be highly efficient and quick. We reckon Hoe Kee isn't the place for you to sit around and chit-chat over two hour meals because waiting patrons will be eyeing you down with invisible lasers - a hint you to leave. While many prefer Chung Wah's within the vicinity, Hoe Kee has its own regulars and it is safe to say that whichever you prefer, you still won't leave here feeling unsatisfied.
    Tips

Only stir-fried cabbage available for vegetables.

It is true that Melaka is filled with chicken rice balls. There's just so many that one might be confused at which is the best. Old Town Chicken Rice Balls on one hand, is probably one of the top few places to indulge yourself in some balls while on the other, still below the rank of other elites in Melaka. As expected, the chicken here is steamed quite beautifully - not too over nor under with just the right amount of chewiness. It is also really fresh, so tasting the essence of chicken will be lovely. On top of that, the rice balls are made quite smooth but powdery.

Standing tall and bright red in colour - Famosa Chicken Rice Ball was once known as the place to enjoy chicken rice balls along Jonker Street. Over the years, they had made a name for themselves but slowly lost its traction due to rising competition. Aside from all that, they have managed to stay in business all these years with their slightly oily, but still amazing steamed chicken and beautifully carved rice balls. As a whole, it is a lot oiler than most chicken rice balls in Melaka, which also gives it more flavour. Those that do not enjoy fat as much might not like what they have to offer.

    Tips

    Cash only.

Hainamko at Jalan Bendahara offers authentic Hainanese cuisine, including Malacca's famous chicken rice ball. If you're not a fan of these rice balls, you can also opt for regular rice. Many think that Hainamko's version of Malacca's signature dish is way better than those in Jonker Street. You can accompany your meal with authentic Hainanese coffee and end it with a bowl of refreshing cendol. Also, Hainamko also sells some housemade products to take home such as kaya, chili sauce and Hainanese coffee powder!

Another option away from Jonker Street, Heng is another restaurant in loved by locals. Good reviews reckon that the chicken is tender, juicy and succulent with classic fragrant soy sauce. However, bad reviews reckon that the chicken is tasteless... These mixed reviews are jumbled in time and thus, we believe that inconsistency may be involved. The rice balls have been claimed to be absolutely delicious and less oily. Nonetheless, many locals mark this restaurant as their favourite to-go place for the dish, so you should give it a chance!

For those who are not a fan of Malaccan chicken rice balls, you can always opt for something more common - like Ku Loong Kee's signature chicken rice. Just beautifully cooked chicken, a handful of beansprouts and a plate of fragrant steamed, oiled rice.
