Best Ayam Penyet in KL

Written by Updated ago

Javanese culture has always been an influence in Malaysian culture due to the migration of the Javanese people to this country hundreds of years ago. Ever since then, Malay food has always had a certain type of Indonesian flair to it. But recently, a certain Javanese dish has been winning the hearts of Malaysians and it goes by the name of…. drumroll please… Ayam Penyet. Here are the to-go places in KL for this smashing dish (no pun intended).

I have friends living in this area since they were kids and as far as Ayam Penyet goes according to them, nothing can beat the ones they serve at Ayam Penyet Ria. The skin of the fried chicken is so crispy yet the batter is not too thick, making it just nice and satisfying. Extra spicy sambal lovers will rejoice at the hotness of the sambal here but those who can’t bear that burning feeling, bear in mind that a little goes a long way.
    Tips

The parking can be a huge hassle as construction is still ongoing due to Wangsa Walk’s expansion, so a huge tip will be to park at Wangsa Walk’s parking lot. You may have to pay but it will spare you the time and frustration.

    Things to expect

The rice comes as a top up to the dish so you have to order them as two separate items. Aside from that, do expect some loud Indonesian rock music blaring from the stereo. You’d really feel like you are in Jakarta.

Food Clans's take on the classical dish "ayam penyet" is amazing. The chicken is succulent and taste's amazing. Cooked to perfection, the chicken is tender despite being of kampung origins. The best part? All of its ingredients are fresh and non-frozen! An interesting thing to note is that the sweet sauce goes extremely well when taken with the chilli paste. Simple and amazing.
    Tips

The chili paste may be too spicy for some people, be sure to mix with the sweet sauce given.

    Things to expect

As Food Clans is privately owned, expect a variety of different exceptionally tasty food stalls to choose from. There's also free WiFi and the atmosphere is relaxing and cooling unlike most food court stylized places,

A crunchy flattened fried chicken (Ayam Penyet) served with either mild or hot sambal (your own pick!) to excite and satisfy the sambal lovers. Chill and take a moment to feel the perfection of the crispy skinned chicken served on a wooden plate. This Indonesia traditional food is easy to locate at NU Sentral Mall whenever you stop by to shop and get hungry. Plus, you can refill your own sambal and the tempeh is not overly oil. Healthful, don't you think?

The ayam penyet here is not the main attraction but the sambal is. Spicy yet addictive, it will make you order more even if your nose was getting runny. THAT is how addictive it is. However, I would prefer it more if the tempeh (soycake) was less dry. The location of this restaurant is pretty hard to miss as it sits above the infamous sole Burger King franchise in Wangsa Maju. Plus, just like Ayam Penyet Ria, it is a walking distance from Wangsa Walk.
    Tips

When ordering, make sure to specify the thigh part as the servers will just serve the ribs part initially here.

    Things to expect

There is no outdoor seating here so smokers, you have been warned. Plus, the interior is very clean so do not worry about flies & whatnot distracting you from your food.

Catchy name for a restaurant aye? Imagine going to this place & saying “Hey, I had Ayam Penyet Nyet Nyet!”. This place is easy on the wallet, that’s for sure. The ayam penyet is super delishhh but just like every dish, it is very very spicy (you have been warned). Good news for spice lovers like me though. Another plus point is their portion size: they serve HUGE crispy-skinned, soft chicken thighs. Now that’s already a good enough reason to go to this place, don’t you think so?
    Tips

Go at night to avoid the really really hot weather and dust from the road nearby.

    Things to expect

Low prices. Compared to the other places listed, Ayam Penyet Nyet Nyet offers really low prices. Plus easy parking since they have their own space.

    Best with

Their iced lime juice which is super refreshing.

Being a local favourite, this place does live up to its expectations. Even though pecel lele is the forte here, the succulent perfection that is its ayam penyet is a vision on its own as you can see from the photo. The waiters serve the dish as soon as it’s cooked, ensuring that it still remains fresh & hot when the customers have them. Plus, the dish is served on wooden plates, adding a rustic feel to the meal which makes you feel like you’re eating it in a village.
    Tips

Avoid lunchtime on both weekends & weekdays. You will thank FoodAdvisor for this advice.

    Things to expect

The atmosphere is very low-key and non-pretentious. Oh, and it is an outdoor roadside place so it can get pretty hot in the daytime plus lots of people crowd the place during lunchtime so plan your time carefully!

    Best with

Accompany this dish with pecel ikan lele or pecel puyuh (quail) or the ever refreshing iced lime juice.

There is a reason why Dapur Penyet has achieved great success (EIGHT outlets in Malaysia!) and it is because of its wholesome ayam penyet dish. Crispy on the side, soft on the inside and not too oily, it strikes the perfect balance. The fried tofu can be a little bit on the sour side but overall, the chicken made up for its downers.
    Tips

Good news for those living in Cyberjaya & Putrajaya, Dapur Penyet has delivery service too! Just call the toll free number we’ve included in the Contact section below. You’re welcome.

    Things to expect

It is a respectable joint but do remember to tell the waiters to switch on the aircond if it gets too hot.

The apulkat juice is something rare to find here so be sure to give it a try! PS: Alpukat is actually avocado.

Balifeel, true to its name has a real Balinese feel to its ayam penyet & it translates really well into their ayam penyet dish. The sambal is just spicy enough to take in for the non-spicy lovers and the tempeh was extra crispy. The food presentation is really nice, serving the chicken on banana leaves but one thing I wished was for them to smash the chicken more as it wasn’t “penyet” enough for me. Good news though, Balifeel is now available for delivery on FoodPanda!
    Tips

Some of the names on the menu may sound unfamiliar as it retains its true Indonesian name so ask the waiter to explain for each dish.

    Things to expect

Expect a well-decorated restaurant. You have to pay for the parking but it’s quite cheap so no worries. However, expect an almost-always crowded place due to its location beneath office towers.

    Best with

Have this with their Teh Sosro, otherwise known as Indonesian Tea & don’t forget to try Es Teller (a milky fruity dessert)
